As a qualified counsellor, I help people get their lives back on track. I personally know what it's like to have your whole world thrown into chaos. I know what it's like to watch all your hopes and dreams shattered by an unforeseen trauma or a devastating event.
Like many survivors out there, I know that it takes tremendous effort and hard work to rebuild a shattered life and restore some normality to broken dreams. Yet, with a willingness of heart it can be done. Maybe this is something you resonate with, and if it is, then maybe I can help you along your journey.
Many people come to counselling because they’ve tried to cope on their own — for months, sometimes years.
You might notice:
Ongoing anxiety or tension that won’t settle
Emotional exhaustion or burnout
A sense of disconnection from yourself or others
Trauma from past experiences that still affects your present
Relationship difficulties or communication breakdowns
Feeling “stuck” despite knowing you want things to change
Counselling isn’t about being “fixed.”
It’s about understanding what’s happening beneath the surface — and learning how to respond differently, with clarity and self-respect.
Counsellor | Therapist | Trauma-Informed Practitioner
I’m David Barton, a Dunedin-based counsellor with a PhD in Psychology, a Diploma in Counselling, and many years of experience working with individuals facing trauma, stress, anxiety, and life transitions.
I bring both professional training and lived experience into the counselling room.
Having personally walked through serious illness, loss, and major life disruption, I understand how deeply suffering can affect identity, confidence, and hope. This shapes the way I work — with respect, patience, and realism.
My role isn’t to tell you who to be. It’s to help you reconnect with who you already are.
I work primarily with:
Adults experiencing anxiety, trauma, or stress
People recovering from emotionally painful life events
Couples seeking clarity and healthier communication
Clients navigating identity shifts, burnout, or major transitions
Counselling sessions are available in Dunedin and online across New Zealand.
