Amongst other things, I am also a husband, father, author, musician, cancer survivor, and Christian.
I was born in South Africa and immigrated to New Zealand in 1998. I studied counselling at the Otago Polytechnic and later went on to complete a Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Otago.
In 2018, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, a blood cancer that grew rapidly and spread furiously around my body. A tumor in my spine eventually fractured my spine open from the inside, crushing my spinal cord and putting me for a time in a wheelchair.
My battle with cancer was probably the greatest battle I ever had to face. I had faced many battles before, but none could have prepared me for the amount of pain and suffering my cancer battle would produce.
Perhaps you have experienced a similar life-altering event. Something so dramatic that it throws your entire existence out of balance - something that forces you completely off track.
I started "on-track-counselling" to help people get their lives back on track. All sorts of things can throw our lives out of whack and oftentimes we need support to get us back on track.
If that's something I can help you with, then let's talk.
Thank you for visiting my page, and I hope that some of my training and experience will be useful in helping you achieve more of the life you are looking for.
With Gratitude
David Barton
A great Psychologist once said that the amount of change you need to make can be calculated with a simple formula. Essentially, within us exists two selves: the ideal self and the real self. The ideal self represents the person we want to be, while the real self is the person we are right now. The degree of change you need to make, is calculated as the difference between the two.
I graduated from the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand with a Ph.D. in Psychology. I was quite privileged to go to Otago University as it is one of the top 100 universities in the world. People come from all over the globe to study here.
I received my Diploma in Counselling from the Otago Polytechnic and specialized in 3 modalities: Person Centered Counselling, Solutions Focused Brief Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy.
The above two qualifications are my most significant, but I have also completed several other short courses and diplomas including:
Diploma in Organizational Psychology
Primary Practice Certificate in Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy
Certification as a relationship workshop facilitator
A Diploma in Ministry
Most recently a Certificate in REBT Mindset Mastery from Transformation Academy
Career Coaching Accreditation
Of course, my learning doesn't stop here as one of my key values is continued education. I enjoy keeping up with the latest psychological research, including any new ways to help people overcome their problems and enjoy healthier and happier lives.
